Welcome, and thanks for posting. My suggestion would be to run a verify on a weekly basis. If the file asks for a rebuild at that point, then go ahead. Otherwise, I would not rebuild it. As for the problem that's coming up with the vendors, I'd recommend you get in touch with our tech support, since you may have data damage that needs to be taken care of in-house. Hope this helps.
Question:
Opening files on remote machines Nov 09, 2007 03:49 pm
So, I'm told that no version of Quickbooks for the Mac will open up a file from a server. Is this really true?
We are having to copy files back and forth between machines. This is a dangerous and insecure way to deal with bookkeeping files as versions can get confused and data corrupted or lost.
What is the story here? Is Intuit that far behind the times? Other software has been doing this for decades. It seems like a huge flaw in an accounting software system.
Why did Quickbooks make the decision to not build in this simple feature?
Welcome, and thanks for the post. You are correct. At this time, multi-user is not a feature available on QuickBooks for Mac. My suggestion would be to enter product feedback by selecting the QuickBooks menu, then selecting QuickBooks Feedback.
Question:
Intermittent errors Nov 09, 2007 04:00 pm
We have been seeing intermittent errors since I have been here but they seemed to correspond to running reports and were considered a low priority problem. Today there are multiples of this error and no reports are being run. Mondays are busy though. I am new to Quickbooks and do not know much about it. The error is:
SGL Server request failed: Failed to update Invoices in QuickBooks : Error occured during write back: There was an error when modifying a Invoice. QuickBooks error message: The internals could not be locked. They are in use by another user.
Previous investigation into the error showed that the tracking number being entered by Worldship from the warehouse was not being written into QUickbooks when this error occurred. The warehouse folks worry that the delay caused by the error will impact them more and more as orders ramp up with the coming holidays plus new promotions we are about to run. The error causes them some delay waiting for it to clear, plus the additional time needed later to enter the tracking number by hand.
Is there anything I can do to alleviate this problem?
I'd recommend going through this and trying to eliminate as many possibilities as you can, until we can find the culprit. As Sherlock Holmes used to say:
"When you have eliminated all which is impossible, then whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth."
Question:
QB 2006 Multi to QB 2008 Prem Networked Nov 09, 2007 04:07 pm
I am planning an upgrade to QB Prem 2008. Present config is 2 clients w/datafile sitting on W2000sp4.
Building new S2003 R2 Box for Prem 2008 requirements.
How can I import W2000 QBdata to QB Prem installed on S2003 Box?
Thanks for posting. Simplest way would be to copy the QuickBooks company file to removable media, such as a CD-ROM or a Jumpdrive, and copy it to the Windows Server 2003 system once you've got that up and running with QuickBooks. To find out where the company file is currently located, open the company file in QuickBooks, then press the F2 key on your keyboard. Look for File Location in the window that opens, and it will list the full path of the company file's location. Hope this help.
Question:
slow ...premier 2007 Nov 09, 2007 04:27 pm
I just recently switched to Premier 2007 multi user version (from Premier 2005 -single user). There are only 2 users but since the switch accessing any data is slow as molasses. It is virtually unusable. The file is on a mapped drive. I have had computer technicians come in and check out the set up, but no one can figure out why the program is running so slow when 2 people are using it at the same time. I have about 4 years of data on the file. Could this be slowing it down? It was fine with QB 2005. Please help!!!
Thanks for posting. Troubleshooting network speed issues can be difficult. Fortunately, Nic, one of our forum hosts, put together a performance troubleshooting guide to help us:
Although the 4 years worth of transactions may be the issue, I would recommend following the document, just to make sure there is nothing else. Try to eliminate as many possibilities as you can, until the culprit is found. Let us know hot it goes.
welcome, and thanks for posting. I couldn't remember off the top of my head, so I had to log in to QuickBooks to test this one. The company name field for QuickBooks Premier and QuickBooks Enterprise Solutions accepts up to 59 characters.
Question:
Network Consultant Nov 09, 2007 04:55 pm
Thus far on the Enterprise 8.0 installation everything seems to be working great. However, we have one company file created in Quickbooks 4 that is now asking for an admin password to convert the database code to 8.0. All other companies converted OK. We can open our QB4 company by using QB 4 but would like to convert this to our new Enterprise 8.0 version so we do not have to use seperate QuickBooks software. A previous employee may have set up an admin password unknown to anyone else here on site. Intuit only offers a paid service to reset the admin password for this version. Is there an ini file or registry value or whatever that can be modified to reset this password without having to pay a fee to Intuit. We used the reset password tool available for 2006-07 without additional charges and as it states it does not work or versions under 5. We will continue to use the older version rather than pay a reset fee, can you give us a KB article that will allow us to reset this password?
Once there, select QuickBooks for Windows 2005 or earlier from the drop-down arrow in Step 3. Follow the steps presented, and let us know how it works for you.
want to set up multi user access and i have the company file in a shared folder which the other computers can see it says to enable multi user access on the host computer so the other computers can access the file. When i go to the host and select multi user access it gives me an error number -6123,0 and says something about cannot contact database server which i dont understand because the computer im on is the server. im unsure of what to do now please help..thanks in advance.
Thanks for posting. Error -6123, 0 normally means the database server cannot connect to the data file. We have a Knowledge Base article on troubleshooting this error:
Question:
Peer to peer vs. Server Nov 09, 2007 06:23 pm
Our office currently runs on a peer-to-peer network with about 12 computers. The PC that acts as the server holds files only and no programs are run off of this computer. Our QB's file is on this computer but each person runs the program on their computer and accesses the file. We are looking to purchase and set up a real server based network and I wanted to confirm the advantages of doing this.
Will quickbooks run more efficiently?
Is this a safer way to set up a network?
What should we look for in a server?
Thanks for the post. As long as QuickBooks has lots of bandwidth to work with, it will be fine, regardless of it being a peer-to-peer or client/server network. The question then becomes one of how many users will be accessing the file at one time. Windows XP Home Edition allows up to 5 concurrent connections, while Windows XP Professional allows up to 10. What this means is that if more than 5 computers tried to connect to a shared resource on a Windows XP Home Edition system, be it a printer or the QuickBooks company file, the 6th or higher computer would get an error stating that the connection cannot be made. On Windows XP Professional, it would be the 11th or higher computer. If you plan to have more than 10 computers connect concurrently to a shared resource, then it will be necessary to purchase a computer with a network operating system installed, like Windows Server 2003, that allows more than 10 concurrent connections. Since you have 12 computers already, my assumption is that things are going well, and you're probably going to grow and need more connections to the QuickBooks file fairly soon. I hope this helps, and if you have any other questions, please feel free to post.
We have two satellite offices and our accountant works out of one of them, but the boss wants all the financial info stored at the server in the main office is there a way to allow him web access to Quick books, while he is not at the main office
Thanks for posting. Yes, your accountant can access the office PC across the Internet using WebEx, which is built into QuickBooks. To access it, click on the File menu and select Utilities > Remote Access. From there, click on the Sign up for QuickBooks Remote Access weblink, and it will walk you through the sign up process. Let us know if this works out for you.
Question:
Install QBES 8.0 from a command line? Nov 09, 2007 06:39 pm
We are new to QuickBooks and need to install over 20 PC's with the client software.
How can I install from the commandline and hardcode the client portion of the install, license info, etc. so that this can be run by users or at login without any intervention?
Sounds like you're looking for something akin to unattended Windows installs. That is a great idea, and would urge you to enter it as a product suggestion by clicking on the Help menu and selecting Send Feedback Online > Product Suggestion. As a workaround, I did a google search on "unattended installation -windows" and found several packages that will allow you to create scripts through a GUI. Hope this helps.
Question:
Dedicated terminals running qb's program off server Nov 09, 2007 06:41 pm
Currently our Quickbooks Ent. 8.0 program is run on each individual computer which accesses the central file. Is it possible to run the program itself on the server only and access the program and the file from terminals throughout the office?
Best way to do this would be to setup a Microsoft Terminal Server and install QuickBooks on it. Then install the remote client on the systems throughout the office, and have them connect to the Terminal Server. Hope this helps.
