I have two programs on my computer. QB Pro 04 and QB Premier Contractor 04. One of my customers is a Contractor (I am a bookkeeper) and wanted me to keep his books in contractor. He also bought the same program so I could put the data onto his computer also. When I installed Premier it moved all my company files to Contractor. Not just my contractor company file. I was just going to delete the other companies off of the contractor program(all companies still on Pro also) but the two programs seemed to be linked. Any transaction that I do in any company updates in both programs. I want them to be separated and/or unlinked together. Any ideas on how i can do this? I am using Windows XP. Thank you.
Re: Two QB programs on same computer - problems Jan 04, 2005 03:13 pm
Jo's correct. You can install as many different versions as you want by installing them in different folders. But the 2004 Pro and the 2004 Premier Contractors are two Editions of the same version. It doesn't matter where you locate your data files. I don't even keep my company data files in the QuickBooks folder at all. You can use the Premier Contractors version for all your companies. The only difference is that the contractors edition has some special reports and stuff for contractors. It won't affect your other files at all. The other companies will still be the same data as you had before. It won't turn them into contractors. When you installed the Premier Edition, it replaced the Pro version in the QB folder anyway.
Loading QB Pro and keeping QB Basics active Aug 31, 2004 12:43 pm
What will happen if I load QB Pro when I have current Basics with data and companies. I want to keep that active and not spoil the data by adding QB Pro. I want to use QB Pro for other companies. Can that be done without it without automatically upgrading Basic to Pro?
Re: Loading QB Pro and keeping QB Basics active Aug 31, 2004 01:24 pm
When you install QB Pro, it will overwrite the Basic program itself. The Pro can read either the Basic or the Pro files. You can only run one "flavor" of any current program release on a single computer. You can run different years versions though if you install them in their own folders. You won't hurt the basic files if you work in the Pro on your computer. I use the Premier Accountant's version of each year's programs. I have them all back to QB99. I have client's that use the Basic and the Pro "flavors" of many various year's versions.
You just need to be careful not to open a 2002 version data file in the wrong 2004 version of the program. It's not Basic or Pro you need to worry about.
Re: using canadian and us versions on same machine Sep 01, 2004 07:51 pm
If it's possible to do, you have to install them in different folders. Select 'Custom' when you get the screen that shows you the location, then give it a new name (on the end).
I am going to do some work for a customer who used QB Pro to create data. I am using QB Basic for another customer. Can these two exist together on my system if I install one in a different folder? Thanks.
yes they can. make sure you set up two different folders. (i'm extra cautious, i'd put one in the Intuit folder and then the second one directly on c: )
when you are restoring files, make sure you restore the right file to the correct version - you don't want to upgrade the one company file!
I disagree. I may be wrong, but I don't think you can install the same version on one computer more than once because of the internal stuff it writes to the Windows registry. You can install different versions in different folders, but you can only have one "flavor" of each version. If you install the Pro Flavor, it will work on both the Pro and the Basic flavor files. In the future, if you are going to be supporting client files, use the Premier flavor because it will read all the files from that version. I'm calling them "flavors" to keep the subject matter straight.
multiple versions of QuickBooks Nov 27, 2004 11:18 am
I would like to install QuickBooks 2004 on my computer without having it overwrite my 2001 version (one of my clients uses the old version). How can I keep multiple versions on my computer?
Re: multiple versions of QuickBooks Nov 27, 2004 12:35 pm
Juswt install them into different folders. Do the Custom install and select another folder name. I have a folder for every version since 6.0 on the same computer.

Going from clients office to home office using QB 2004 Mar 28, 2005 01:24 pm
When using QB 2004 (I am a bookkeeper) my client has said that I may go from their office back to mine. I am planning on using PC Anywhere. Does anyone have familiarty with this? 2nd question is they have an employee who uses the software at their office. If I am able to find QB 2004 and I back up and restore I would think her info at the office would be overwritten when I restore back at their office. Can anyone answer these questions please? Thanks
I am not completely sure about your question, as it seems to have a couple parts.
Pt 1: Are you going to use PCAnyware to just transfer the QBB (backup) or QBW (working) file to your PC? Why not email it to yourself, or put it on a memory stick?
Pt2: If you are using a copy of QB2004 at home ( hope it is your copy) anyway, if you open the QBW, or restore the QBB file and Open the company at HOME, and someone else is working on the same file THERE, you cannot "synch" the two file or "merge" them or whatever you wanna call it.
PC Anywhere lets you work on their computer from yours. You take control of their computer or you can watch what they are doing, not just Quickbooks, so the answer is no to if they and you can work on it at the same time.
If you copy/backup and then work on it from your office and then restore to theirs, yes it will overwrite anything THEY have done since the time you copied/backup and only have everything that YOU have done on it.
